Description

Marriage ring for Edward Boyd & Janet Yule. A smoothly conforming yellow gold band with fine ridged details on the outer, engraved on the inner in italic script 'E. Boyd & Yule Novr 15th 1797', approximately 5.2mm in width. Marked yellow gold, approximately 2.8 grams in weight, indistinct makers mark, English hallmarks, circa 1797.

Accompanied by a biography and family tree of James Boyd.

Edward Boyd was a London merchant who held the office of Deputy Lieutenant. On the 15th of November 1797 he married Janet Yule the eldest daughter of Benjamin Yule in Edinburgh, Scotland. They went on to have ten children many of which traveled abroad on their business endeavors.Their most famous son Benjamin Boyd born in 1803, began his career as an entrepreneur and London stockbroker before setting sail for Australia and forming the Royal Bank of Australia. With the capital that he raised during his earlier years he went on to control over 200,000 acres of land in the Monaro and Port Phillip districts in New South Wales. He also flourished as a trader, owning three steamers and three sailing ships under Boyd and Company. His greatest accomplishment was perhaps the founding of the first settlement on Twofold bay, situated on the south coast of New South Wales in 1843 which he named Boydtown. In the 1840's Boydtown was deserted by Boyd when his finances collapsed. Today the area is known for it's picturesque coastline and is frequented by tourists. In 1971 the Ben Boyd National Park was named in his honor.

This ring is in fine condition with an attractive patina.
