Description

Post Medieval momento mori ring,'in god alone we too are one'. A rare ring, the exterior of the D-shape band intricately engraved with floral motifs, and a skull with eyes, nose and mouth, with a black enamel background throughout, the interior inscribed with italic script 'in god alone we too are one', approximately 4mm in width. Tested yellow gold, 4.7 grams in weight, maker's mark 'D F', circa 1700 - 1750.

The enameled foliate decoration on the exterior can be compared with other posy rings of the 17th century, such as HAMP-CD6223 (2020T970) and SWYOR-4DC98F (2020T632). The inscription is unusual, one other example can be seen with this exact posy, but on a plain gold ring, the posy ring is held by the British Museum and published by Evans (1932:57, BM accession number: AF.1289).

Accompanied by documentation from the Portable Antiquities Scheme stating that this ring was found whilst metal detecting in Hatford, Oxfordshire whilst metal detecting on June 11th 2021, reference OXON-FBF56A under the Portable Antiques Scheme, disclaimed as treasure under the Treasure Act, reference 2016 T779.
